The season is off to a great start for the Eagles wrestling team.
On Saturday, Sullivan captured second place in a nine-team tournament at John Burroughs, taking runner-up to Ladue.
Sullivan had nine wrestlers earn either first, second or third out of the 11 that competed in the tournament.
“I thought this tournament was a great one for starting the season,” said Eagles head Matt Peregoy. “There was some pretty tough competition, which we need.”
Peregoy said that Ladue is a strong Class 3 program.
“The fact that we fielded an 11-man roster and still came away with second place says a lot about how far our athletes have come in a very short time,” he said. “They are working hard every day and continue to improve.”
Dalton Turner (195) and Luke Pryor (220) were champions in their respective weight classes.
Jacob Dixon (106), Ryan Eastman (132), Travis Mogab (138), Austin Mertz (145) and Danton Creek (182) all took second.
Clayton Mayer (152) and Billy Corson (160) were third.
Sullivan has a busy week ahead, facing Windsor, Affton and St. Mary’s on Tuesday, Webster Groves on Wednesday and the Union Tournament on Saturday.
“These guys understand why the schedule has been toughened up and are willing to use their losses as mechanisms of learning and growth,” said Peregoy. “I am proud of the effort that these guys put out this weekend.”
