Thanksgiving Challenge Has Small Increase For 2012

By James B. Bartle
The Sullivan Chamber of Commerce Thanksgiving Challenge Food Drive has concluded with area schools bringing in some 6,583.78 pounds of food. One local business, Sullivan Family Dentistry raised 564 pounds.
This total is combined with the annual Sullivan Chamber of Commerce, KTUI Radio/Fidelity Channel 95 and Sullivan Independent News Roof Top Food Drive held Nov. 2, which raised some $5,617  in cash donations and 4,012 pounds of food bringing the final total to 67,329.78  pounds of food for the Meramec Community Mission Food Pantry. The mission can use $10 in cash to purchase 100 pound of food.
“This year our school totals were down a little and the Roof Top Food Drive was up in cash donations,” said Debbe Campbell, Chamber Director.
Campbell stated that the cash donations will help the mission purchase food for the food pantry and they are able to really stretch each dollar.
The overall school totals for the 2011 Thanksgiving Challenge were as follows: Sullivan Elementary, 1,351.2 pounds; Spring Bluff School, 1626.7 pounds; Sullivan Middle School, 754 pounds; Sullivan Primary, 1,563 pounds;  St. Anthony, 1,288.8 pounds; and Strain Japan School, totals were still being counted.
“When we visited the schools all of the kids were very excited to be able to help with the challenge,” said Campbell. “We once again appreciate everyone who supported the Thanksgiving Challenge this year and made donations through the schools and roof top food drive.”
