Firefighters Quick Response Helps Save Business

By James B. Bartle
A quick response by firefighters prevented a fast moving fire from destroying a home and business at 2379 South Service Rd. W., Cavern City Auto Sales, Tues., Oct. 30, at 3:55 p.m.
“Our first apparatus arrived on the scene of the fire at 4:02 p.m.,” said Sullivan Fire Chief, Rich White. “Firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control by 4:19 p.m. and remained on the scene until 5:38 p.m.”
According to White the fire is believed to have started from embers and ash in a wheelbarrow next to a wood pile outside of a garage at the property.
“The wood pile caught fire from the embers in the wheelbarrow and then moved to a garage on the property and was beginning to melt the siding on the home and business when firefighters arrived,” said White.
“If we hadn’t made a quick response to this alarm the house could have been lost as well.”
White indicated that the contents of the garage were destroyed but the home was saved.
“We had 13 firefighters battling the fire with four apparatus,” said White.
The garage and contents were a total loss.
