On Mon., Aug. 6 at 3:15 PM, Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a residence in the 800 block of Gerling Lane outside New Haven in reference to a gunshot victim.
Upon arrival, deputies determined that the owner of the residence was sighting in a scope for a 22 cal, rifle. He was standing in a work shop shooting out a door in to a target. At one point, his wife, identified as Ruth Ann Kuschel, age 63, came around the corner of the shed not seeing her husband. Her husband did not see her approaching the shed. A shot was fired through the open door striking her in the upper chest area.
The husband attempted CPR and was later assisted by a Franklin County Deputy until the arrival of New Haven Ambulance. Ms. Kuschel was pronounced deceased by New Haven Ambulance personnel. Information at this time indicates that the shooting was an accident. No foul play is suspected.
