Dear Editor,
The community of Sullivan should take great pride in the work of the charitable organizations and churches that have taken an active part in serving the citizens of the Sullivan area. They are helping to build a vibrant city.
The most affluent communities of the region have strong charitable bases which have existed for many years. When charitable organizations and churches take actions which prevent homelessness for individuals or families that have experienced a crisis due to job loss, illness, accidents or destructive acts of nature, a trickle down effect occurs which protects the entire community.
Landlords and utilities benefit, of course, but so do local small businesses and local industries. Communities thrive when they have a stable population and a stable local workforce available. Money circulates and makes it possible for a community to maintain solid growth. When people who have been helped come back and offer to help others, a positive force is created which benefits everyone.
Sullivan is fortunate to have Sullivan Emergency and Meramec Mission available to work with local citizens who have crisis situations. St. Anthony’s Church, Holy Martyrs, St. Vincent DePaul Society and Temple Baptist Church also work with families in crisis. None of these groups work alone.
In addition to their own contributions, they cooperate with each other and with other groups and churches in Sullivan and in nearby communities to meet the needs of families with emergencies. There are other churches in Sullivan which also serve the community in important ways, either within their own congregations or with other types of ministries.
The Journey to Bethlehem that is performed every year by the Christian Church and the Grace Methodist Church’s dinners are also important contributions. There are numerous individuals in Sullivan who quietly make substantial donations which enable the charities to continue their work.
Habitat for Humanity is another very important contributor to Sullivan’s well-being. There are, undoubtedly, many other worthwhile activities taking place in Sullivan and it would be nice to learn more about them. Perhaps individuals performing those activities would be willing to share information through this column.
For those who have been unemployed for a substantial length of time, charitable groups offer yet another benefit. One of the best ways to maintain an up-to-date resume that could lead to new employment is to volunteer for a charity or church organization that is actively working to help others in need.
When employers consider hiring new employees or are filling existing job openings, those individuals with the most current work activities will be considered first. The types of work experience available from charities may also broaden the types of experience an individual can offer to an employer.
When someone is willing to work without compensation, that person is more than likely going to be an excellent employee for a prospective employer.
