The implementation of Horizon Clinicals and CWI Patient Care Optimization is well on its way to becoming a reality at Missouri Baptist Sullivan Hospital. Horizon Clinicals is a new computer program that will replace the inpatient paper charting system that has been used for years.
Electronic documentation at MBSH will provide more comprehensive, real-time, user-friendly information that is easily accessible by any member of the healthcare team at anytime. It will also help to achieve safer and more standardized processes consistent throughout the BJC HealthCare System.
For over two years, the health care professionals throughout the BJC HealthCare System have been working hard to standardize patient care processes.  It is the vision of BJC and the Clinical Workflow Initiative (CWI) to be the leader in delivering the safest, most efficient patient-centered care through our people and technology.
CWI consists of several teams that have developed processes to simplify and improve the care delivered at BJC hospitals through safe, transparent, efficient, patient-centered workflows that are coordinated across the continuum of care. Teams included Patient History, Assessment, Reassessment, Care Coordination, Medication Administration, Resource Management, Orders and Results and Patient Discharge Transition.
The health care staff at Missouri Baptist is off and running with thorough training classes. Management, Superusers and Classroom Educators began training on July 19. Training will continue through September for the rest of the staff.
“We have an experienced training group working to help employees understand and become comfortable with the new technology and patient care optimization processes,” said Laura Tuschhoff, RN coordinator of Clinical Information Services.
The “Go-Live” date for implementing the new system is set for Sept. 18. Support staff from BJC will be present during the transitional period as well as managers and other highly trained staff.
To continue the support through the entire process, the Superusers will be assigned to cover shifts around the clock so that someone is always available to answer questions and provide assistance. They will always be noticeable with bright green shirts that display, “Superusers for SUPER employees—We’re here to help you transition with ease!”
“We anticipate a successful transition into the new program, because of all the hard work and effort everyone has been putting into the training,” said Carmen Bartolotta, chief nursing executive.
