One person was fatally injured and two others injured in a two-vehicle accident on eastbound Interstate 44, 610 feet east of the Route D west overpass, on Sun., Aug. 23 at 6:45 p.m.
According to the Missouri Highway Patrol, the accident occurred when Genevieve E. Markowski, 18, St. Louis, was operating an 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier eastbound in the right lane when she attempted to merge to the left. The left front of her vehicle struck the right rear of an eastbound 2000 Ford Explorer driven in the left lane by Timothy J. Nolting, 42, O’Fallon. Nolting then lost control of his vehicle with it overturning and exiting into the right side median between I-44 and the South Service Rd. The vehicle then landed upright in the median ditch.
Billie J. Manley. 29, O’Fallon, not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the Explorer and landed in the right lane of I-44.
Manley was transported to Missouri Baptist Hospital, Sullivan, where she was pronounced dead from her injuries.
Two other passengers in the Explorer, Kaleb R. Kay, by Missouri Baptist Ambulance to Missouri Baptist Hospital, Sullivan, for treatment.
The Nolting vehicle sustained total damage while the Markowski vehicle received minor damage.
Eastbound I-44 was closed for several hours following the accident.
Members of the Missouri Highway Patrol, Sullivan Police, Missouri Baptist Ambulance, North Crawford County Ambulance and Sullivan Fire were all involved in the treatment and rescue of the victims.10, O’Fallon, and Jordan S.
