To say that St. Matthew VBS had a successful mission project would be a real understatemnt.
Not only did the 24 children, a large staff, and some generous adults reach the $1,000 goal (to be matched by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans) for Kids Against Hunger, halfway through VBS they had to call the mission directors, Rev. and Mrs. Rudy Schaser, to ask what else they could use some money for.
They were told that the Schasers were planning a mission trip to a large Lutheran School in Uganda, Africa, in November, which was badly in need of medical supplies. The biggest problem for the 468 children and their families was parasitic worms.
For just $1 per person, one child or adult can be “de-wormed” for an entire year. Thanks to the generosity of St. Matthew friends and members, another $648 was raised for medical supplies, in addition to the earlier combined goal of $2,000.
Sunday, July 11 proved to be a great concluding day for Vacation Bible School. Two assembly lines of children and adults filled 40 boxes (of 216 meal packets each) during the Sunday school hour and following the late worship service. This would provide 9,640 persons with a meal that provides 100 percent of total nutrition needed for that day.
