With the economy failing and so many people out of work and displaced, the Clothing For Kids Program is more important now than ever. This is the second year running this program.
This program’s designation is to help children whose families cannot afford to buy them school clothes every year. The Trendy Closet and community sponsors will provide gift certificates for $100 each to five select children from the Sullivan, Bourbon and Cuba High Schools as well as the middle schools.
Donors will “sponsor” a child or children for $50 each. The Trendy Closet will match that donation, making the total donation in the form of a gift certificate for $100.
The selected children will have met a series of three criteria based on a 1-10 point scoring system, with 10 being the highest scoring in that area. That system will encompass need, performance, and a letter of recommendation.
The first criteria: need. Is the family unable for financial reasons to purchase school clothing for their child(ren)?
Second: performance. This does not necessarily mean academic performance, although it can be. Does this child get involved with his/her school and his/her peers? Does this child make an effort every day to be positive even though their situation may not be?
Third and lastly: letter of recommendation. This letter can come from a pastor, a civic or community leader, a counselor; someone who “knows” this child’s situation and is willing to speak up on this child’s behalf.
October 1 has been set as the deadline for entry sheets to be turned in and October 10 is the date the gift certificates will be handed out.
The children will not be recognized publicly for obvious reasons; however, the sponsors most certainly will be by local news media sources.
If your organization has an interest in sponsoring a child or children, please contact Chris Thoms, The Trendy Closet, committee chair, at 573-668-0021.
Your participation and help are very much appreciated.
