Let’s Recycle!
Letter to the Editor:
Do you have 10 minutes (or less) per week for the betterment and enrichment of your community and your planet? That is the amount of time it takes to sort your recyclables. About 10 brief minutes each week! Who can’t eke out that much time for such a good cause?
Please consider the following facts before deciding against recycling in your household:
* An aluminum can that is thrown away will still be a can 500 years from now; but, there is no limit to the number of times it can be recycled.
* Approximately 1 billion trees worth of paper are thrown away each year in the U.S. alone.
* Recycling plastic saves twice as much energy as burning it in an incinerator.
* The U.S. is the #1 trash producing country in the world at 1,609 pounds per person per year. So, 5 percent of the world’s people generate 40 percent of the world’s waste.
We can make a difference! One household, then one more, and one more…you get the picture. It is such a very small expenditure of time and effort for such a very big benefit.
We can be sure that Swinger Sanitation is, indeed, recycling what we put at the curb, because they “are” asking us to sort and separate. Good for them!
Let’s indicate to other communities that Sullivan “is” a progressive town and we “are” on “the leading edge of progress”! This is an excellent place to start.
Sincerely,
Kathl
