He honorably served his country during WWII in the U.S. Army, receiving three Bronze Stars for his service in the South Pacific.  He married Dorothy Dunnigan on August 3, 1946 in Eureka, MO and, to this union, three children were born.
For 50 years, Charles worked for the W.H. Powell Lumber Company until it was purchased by the Gerald Lumber Company.
He and Dorothy were members of the AirStream Club and enjoyed camping. He also enjoyed fishing and bowling, and was a lifetime member of the VFW.
Until ill health forced him to move, he lived at Meramec Valley Camp Resort and commuted daily to Sullivan where he spent time helping his son, Tom, at the bowling alley and took meals daily to his wife, Dorothy, in the nursing home.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy (nee Dunnigan); a son, Tom Slezak and wife, Roxanne; a daughter, Linda Leake and husband, Jay, all of Sullivan; five grandchildren, Jason (Carrie), Keith (Julie), Carma (James), Kylie, and Lisa; great-grandchildren, Wyatt, Maddux, Lacie, Hannah, and Paityn; brother-in-law, Sam Dunnigan and wife, Doris; nieces, nephews; other relatives and friends.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Charles “Butch” Slezak; six brothers, Matt, Tony, Joe, Frank, Bill and Paul; and three sisters, Agnes, Bessie and Hattie.
Funeral services for Charles Slezak were conducted at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, July 13, 2010 in the Chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan, MO, with Pastor Tina Lawrence officiating. Burial was in the Odd Fellows Memorial Cemetery in Sullivan, with full military honors.
