Alert neighbors and a quick response from firefighters is believed to have saved a home at 106 George St. on Wed., June 30.
According to Sullivan Fire Chief Rich White, Sullivan Fire received a report of a garage on fire at a home occupied by Jill Creek, 106 George St., at 3:56 p.m.
“Our firefighters arrived on the scene at 4 p.m. and found heavy smoke coming from the garage of the home,” said White. “Our firefighters made entry into the garage and extinguished the fire at 4:10 p.m.”
White stated that the fire was reported by neighbors on George St., who observed smoke coming from the garage.
“This could have been a full-blown structure fire had it not been for the neighbors calling the fire in to 911 dispatchers and had we not had such a quick response from our senior and junior firefighters,” said White. “We had our full-time firefighters and our volunteer senior and junior firefighters on the scene within four minutes to bring the fire under control.”
White stated that the fire appeared to have been started in a trash can and possibly by a cigarette.
“This was an unintentional fire that caused minimal damage to the home, and mostly smoke damage,” said White. “We were very thankful to save the home and appreciate the neighbors contacting us as quickly as they did.”
