The Sullivan City Council gave approval to several items on Tues., June 15 during their regular meeting.
The council approved three requests before them that included a liquor license and street closure for a fireworks display at the St. Anthony Catholic Church Picnic set for Aug. 28 and 29. The council also approved a temporary street closure for Temple Baptist Church for their Vacation Bible School. The closure would be on July 1 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Tom Thompson, Sullivan Cultural Grant Committee, addressed the council stating that the committee received three grant applications and approved $9,810 for the Sullivan Patrons of the Arts for the community theater on July 30 and 31 and Cornet Chop Suey, a dixieland jazz band performance on Oct. 2.
The council approved the committee recommendation unanimously.
The council received three bids for a compact excavator for the Sullivan Electric Department and awarded the bid to ChaseCo, Sullivan, in the amount of $34,377. The low bid was received from Erb Equipment, Cuba,  at $34,135.
City engineer Robert Schaffer addressed the council along with Mayor J.T. Hardy on a recent meeting with Jocobs Engineering over the sludge overage amount at the former wastewater treatment plant. Jacobs agreed to discount their services on the project by $9,600 and work with the city possibly on some discounted projects in the future to keep a good relationship with the city. The council agreed to this offer.
Schaffer informed the council that the new plant has filled with sludge a little faster than anticipated and that sludge will have to be removed by a contract hauler. Oros & Busch Application Technologies, who worked on the previous treatment plant sludge disposal, was solicited for a bid to remove the sludge at a cost of $32,000.
Schaffer stated that this will have to be done about every three months. A contract for the services will be presented at the next meeting; however. the disposal will occur before the ordinance is approved due to emergency requirements.
The council approved Ordinance 3408, which approved a grant in the amount of $158,850 for land acquisition costs for the former Whitchurch property, located off Acid Mine Rd., for the airport runway protection zone.
The council approved the monthly bills in the amount of $1,248,902.56.
The council went into closed session to discuss two matters of real estate with no action taken.
