Will the historic “Cool Hand Luke” cannon, presently located at the Sullivan Library grounds, be allowed to be given and relocated to the Sullivan VFW Post 3987 or will it remain in downtown Sullivan?
That question is expected to be answered on Tuesday night, July 6, by the Sullivan City Council.
During the council meeting on Tues., June 15, city administrator Mark Falloon reported that he had spoken with the United States Army and, if the city wants to give the cannon to the VFW and allow it to be moved, the VFW has to complete an application with the Army for approval.
Mayor J.T. Hardy asked four of the aldermen in attendance what their feelings were on the issue. The council decided to wait for a decision on the matter until the full board was present on July 6.
Alderman Ryan stated that he understands that this is a sensitive issue, especially for those who worked so hard to bring it to Sullivan. At the same time, he understands that the VFW would like to have it and felt they would take better care of it and preserve it the way it needs to be.
Alderman Dennis Watz also stated that he has had several calls both ways, and asked that the public contact their aldermen or attend the meeting on July 6 and let the council know their feelings on this issue.
Mayor Hardy stated that he was torn on this issue and, being a veteran, it is a tough decision.
“If we were to keep it, we need to take better care of it,” said Hardy.
The council has requested that residents contact their city officials or attend the meeting on Tuesday night, July 6.
