On Thursday, Sullivan police held a round-the-clock Seatbelt Safety Checkpoint at the corner of Springfield Rd. and Cumberland Way, near the Sullivan Water Department, as part of a grant program and an effort to bring motorists awareness of the seatbelt laws.
The checkpoint stopped every fifth vehicle traveling eastbound on Springfield Rd. The stop would allow officers to determine if the motorist and passengers were wearing their seatbelts and then checks were made to determine if they had a valid drivers’ license and proper insurance and registration.
The department issued warnings to motorists for seatbelt violations if they had all their remaining items in order. Those that received a court summons for other items and also did not have their seatbelt on were also given a seatbelt violation.
Total numbers from all three shifts were not available at press time; however, the daytime shift reported the following:
16 written warnings were issued for seatbelt violations; 10 court summons were issued for seatbelt violations; three summons for driving while suspended; three summons for failure to register a motor vehicle; six summons for no insurance; one summons for child seatbelt violation; one summons for no valid operator’s license; one summons for possession of drug paraphernalia; and three arrests on unrelated charges.
