Led by Carissa Richardson’s 22 points and a 16-0 run to start the game, Sullivan won easy over Union on Thursday night, 50-24.
For Sullivan, it was their first conference win of the season after being dealt tough losses against Pacific, St. James and Hermann.
The Lady Eagles came out firing, making six of their first seven shots.
Their first six possessions ended with points.
Jessica Heinle scored six points on two three-pointers. Jett Bouckaert and Sierra Fuchs also knocked down three’s.
It took Union almost five minutes to get their first points. In the second quarter, they got within 10, trailing 23-13. Sullivan never let Union get the deficit to single digits and took a 27-14 lead into halftime.
Sullivan’s biggest lead came at the end of the third quarter when Richardson grabbed an offensive rebound and threw the shot up at the buzzer. That gave the Lady Eagles a 38-21 lead with eight minutes to play.
Sullivan outscored Union, 12-3, in the fourth quarter, with Richardson scoring eight points.
All eight points came in succession.
Union did not score from the field in the fourth quarter, instead getting three free throws.
Sullivan showed no fatigue after losing to Parkway South the night before. After starting out hot and holding a lead at halftime against the Lady Patriots, Sullivan’s shooting went cold and they fell too far behind.
But against Union, Sullivan was able to lean on Richardson when the outside shots stopped falling. Despite Union’s best efforts to plug the lane and deny Richardson the ball, she still scored when she got the touches.
Sullivan was also aggressive on the boards. The Lady Eagles held a big advantage over Union in offensive rebounds and scored 12 second chance points. Richardson had eight while Davis and Fuchs each had two.
The Lady Eagles head into the final week of the season with three conference games to go.
They can still finish over .500 if they can defeat New Haven, Owensville and St. Clair.
