John Henry Martin was born on November 23, 1926 in St. Louis, MO, son of the late John K. Martin and his wife, Marie, nee Figgemeier. He passed away on Monday, February 8, 2010 in Washington at the age of 83 years.
John received his education in St. Louis. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II from July 12, 1945 until February 16, 1947. John was united in marriage to Miss Helen Tobiasz on September 1, 1951 at Sacred Heart Church in St. Louis. They made their home in Webster Groves. They moved to Sullivan in 1988 and then to Washington in 2006.
John was president and owner of Century-Skilcraft until his retirement in 1988. After his retirement and move to Sullivan, he worked at Wally’s Hardware where he was employed from 1988 until 2008.
He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Washington and the Carpenter’s Union of Greater St. Louis Local #795.
He is survived by his beloved wife and best friend, Helen Martin, of Washington; two sons; John Adam Martin and special friend, Patty Snitzer, and John David “JD” Martin and wife, Angie, all of Sullivan, MO; one daughter, Michelle Comage and husband, Thomas, of Washington; three grandchildren, Adrienne and Bernadette Comage and Gracie Martin; one sister, Delores Everett of Hazelwood, MO; nieces, nephews; other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Christine Daniels; one brother, Richard Martin; and two sisters, Pauline Vaughn and Anna Mae Donze.
Funeral Mass was held on Wednesday, February 10, 2010 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Washington with Rev. Michael Boehm officiating. Burial followed in the National Cemetery at Jefferson Barracks.
