Governor Jay Nixon will visit East Central College Thursday, March 4, at 2
p.m. He will announce the funding status of ECC’s application for the
Training for Tomorrow grant, the Community Development Block Grant that
Franklin County applied for last month on behalf of the college. The
announcement will be made in Room 138 (the clinical nursing lab) in the
Health & Science Building on the ECC campus in Union.

ECC President Dr. Ed Jackson will give the welcome, followed by Governor
Nixon’s announcement regarding the grant. A representative from one of the
health care providers who wrote in support of ECC’s application will speak
briefly and then the Governor will return to the podium to take questions.
He will depart the campus at 2:30 p.m. ECC nursing and paramedic students,
along with faculty and staff members from the five programs targeted through
the grant, will be on hand for the announcement.

$12 million is available to Missouri community colleges through the Training
for Tomorrow Grant. Funds that ECC could receive would give the college the
chance to explore possible expansion of the culinary arts program and
addition of an LPN to RN Bridge Program at the Union campus. Three new
offerings could include associate of applied science degree programs in
health information technology, chemical technology and business, management
and technology.

Grant awards are for two years and are restricted primarily to curriculum
development and instruction, as well as other costs associated with
developing and expanding programs. No local matching funds are required.
