Walkers of all ages gathered in the fellowship hall of First Presbyterian Church last week to overcome the cold weather and to support each other in being physically active. First Presbyterian and Peace Lutheran churches successfully kicked off their community walking group, called “In HIS Steps,” on Feb. 2, with over 30 participants during the first week of the program.
“I’m here to exercise because it helps my asthma, and I’m staying active for the upcoming soccer season,” said homeschooler Paul Johnson of his participation in the walking group.
Another walker, Kathy Anderson, said, “Instead of giving up something for Lent this year, I wanted to add something.  I wanted to do something for my health.”
Though each walker has his or her own reason for participating, a common spirit of camaraderie is present among those in the hall.
“In HIS Steps” is a free walking group open to everyone in our community.  The atmosphere is welcoming and noncompetitive. Participants are encouraged to walk at their own pace during the times that best fit their schedules.
The group meets in the fellowship hall of First Presbyterian Church every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m. - 10 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m, except on holidays or days when local schools are closed due to weather.
This walking group was coordinated through Missouri Baptist Sullivan Hospital’s Faithfully Active program for churches. Through this program, the hospital has funding, educational resources and technical assistance available to local churches for implementing physical activity programs.
