Agnes Chapman

Agnes M. Chapman of Bourbon, MO passed away on Thursday, February 18, 2010 at Sycamore Springs Rehabilitation Center in Liberty, IN at the age of 105 years, 5 months and 6 days.
Mrs. Chapman was born in the Delhi area near Cuba, MO on October 12, 1904 to George and Margaret (Chapman) Stevens. As a youngster, she was an exceptional student. During the eighth grade year, her teacher recognized her potential and began prepping her for Teacher’s College in Springfield, MO. At the age of 15, Agnes taught at the Bailey School near Delhi for two years. Her first class was made up of 30 students. At the age of 18, Agnes taught at Delhi School and rode to school every day on horseback. She later lived for a time in St. Louis, but returned to the Argo area where she would live for the next 68 years.
On April 11, 1923, she was united in marriage to Floyd C. Chapman and to this marriage a daughter was born.
Agnes was baptized into the Antioch Christian Church when she was living in the Argo area; however, in 1932 was baptized into the Seventh Day Adventist faith in Bourbon.
Agnes enjoyed gardening and canning and helping her husband on the family farm. She was also known for her work as an accomplished seamstress. In 1956, she sold Christian books door-to-door which she pursued for over three years. She later left that line of work to become a receptionist for Dr. Gordon Riffel, from which she later retired.
It was during this time that the Seventh Day Adventist Church of Bourbon ran a community service center which helped various individuals in the community who were in need and she diligently worked there serving her fellow man.
Agnes also held numerous offices within the church and was a devoted member. She was also fond of traveling and had visited 46 of the 50 states and was also a world-wide traveler.
She is survived by her daughter, Alyce Huff, of Miamisburg, OH; two grandchildren, Donald Huff and Cheryl Kennison; a brother-in-law, Jack Holt; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
Along with her parents and husband, Agnes was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Stewart and Alberta Holt,  and by two half-brothers, Elmer and Claude Stevens.
Visitation for Agnes Chapman were held on Monday, February 22, 2010 from 12 noon until time of service at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Bourbon.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. on Monday, February 22, 2010 from the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Bourbon, with Pastor John Wolfe officiating. Interment was in the Delhi Cemetery, rural Cuba, MO.
