Dear Editor,
This is a rather unusual notice to see in a newspaper, but it is of importance.
Around 5 p.m. on Tues., Jan. 12, a couple purchased a Hewlett-Packard laptap computer from the undersigned at a large department store in Sullivan. The couple looked at the displays of Toshiba and Hewlett-Packard and decided on the HP unit for $498 plus sales tax (around $539).
It was paid for by a debit card; however, they ran the card before I had the transaction completed and, thus, they again had to swipe the card and re-entered the pin number. Apparently, I must have hit the wrong register key and the transaction entered as a cash sale. (This is what was relayed to me by Erica Hinson, the co-manager.) Naturally, there was no cash sale and the register would be short this amount, assuming the debit card transaction did not occur.
Thus, the point of this notice—If the couple who bought the laptop happen to read this, would you please check your receipt and bring it into the store. If it does read as a cash sale and not a debit card sale, would you kindly pay as you intended with your debit card?
You will recall that we discussed laptops and I am the “older” person in electronics who spoke with you two and conducted the sale. I recall how nice you two were and feel sure that you will make this right with the store as your debit card should not have been charged. Naturally, I am sorry this occurred.
Because of this incident, I have been terminated (fired) by co-manager Erica Hinson and what is troubling about the termination is this: in my 75 years upon this earth, I have never been fired from any job—usually, I am complimented on the job I perform. Regardless, I want to make it right for the store as they are entitled to the payment.
Naturally, I am disappointed, in that, the store would terminate a good employee for the past eight years (and I have a few awards from them). Many of you know me quite well, as over the years I have made hundreds of friends in the store and appreciate those of you who would come to electronics to ask for assistance and “pick” my brain for answers.
I do state that, as a Christian, all is in the hands of Our Lord Jesus and He will solve it.
NOTE—The above is written by me, Art LeBeau, and I am solely responsible for its content. The store does not have knowledge that I am placing this notice. I am just hoping the couple involved will happen to read this. If any questions, you may call me on my cell phone at 314-406-8108.
