As the Sullivan Independent News went to press, the Sullivan Fire Department was wrapping up their 2009 Meramec Community Mission Toy Drive, co-sponsored by the Independent News and KTUI/Fidelity Channel 6.
Sullivan Fire Chief Rich White commented on Friday that the toy drive has gone well, with over 400 children in need this holiday season.
“I think the toy drive has gone real well, especially considering the economy and tough times many people are experiencing out there,” said White. “We’re proud that the Sullivan community has come through again to help us help others in need.”
According to White, the monthly open house breakfast at Station One, held the first Thursday of every month, raised $1,231 for the toy drive this year. At press time, the department had received over $1,100 in cash donations while the Meramec Community Mission had received over $1,000 in cash donations and a large donation planned from Sullivan Wal-Mart on Tues., Dec. 15. The department and several toy drive drop-off locations have also received several toys.
“I’m just really pleased with what we were able to do this year and, again, you just can’t say enough about the people in our area and the support they show for others. It’s just outstanding,” said White.
The Meramec Community Mission will disburse the toys to area families on Dec. 18 in a special program sponsored by the Sullivan Knights of Columbus.
The fire department picked up all donations of toys and cash on Tues., Dec. 15.
Final totals from the toy drive will be announced in next week’s Independent News.
