Chris Frye used Homecoming against North County to stage his biggest game of the year.
The senior halfback put up season-highs in rushing yards with 243, rushes with 44 and maybe even yards called back on penalties. He ran for two touchdowns and caught one more, and it was the deciding score in a 24-21 victory for the Eagles.
Frye also had a kickoff return for a touchdown called back.
Sullivan had their best offensive game since playing in Hermann in Week 1. The Eagles had over 330 yards of offense and 86 yards came from the arm of John Kopplemann, who replaced Ryan Hewkin as quarterback.
But Frye’s monstrous game nearly obscured everything else.
Teddi Reed became the first female kicker in Eagles football to kick a field goal. Her 24-yard kick from the left hash mark in the first quarter gave the Eagles a 3-0 lead. Reed, a four-year senior, has yet to miss an extra point this season and added a field goal to her name and her name to the history books.
Sullivan’s defense was much more fresh in the fourth quarter against North County than in previous weeks. The Eagles secondary was constantly challenged by an aggressive passing game from the Raiders. North County threw the ball 35 times and put up 265 yards. All three of their touchdowns came in the air.
North County became the first team to hold a lead over the Eagles this season. After Reed put the Eagles up with 4:41 left in the first quarter, the Raiders struck back in less than a minute.
A four-play drive from their own 30-yard line ended on a touchdown pass to Aaron Parker with 3:58 to play in the quarter.
Sullivan took the lead back with 2:20 left in the half. Frye converted a fourth and two from the Sullivan 42, and three plays later, Kopplemann hit Luke Mayer for a 40-yard reception. Frye scored from inside the five-yard line to give the Eagles a 10-7 lead.
In the third quarter, Frye had eight rushes on Sullivan’s first drive. A pass interference call on North County put the Eagles into the red zone and Frye scored shortly after that at 7:02 in the third quarter. Sullivan led 17-7.
North County needed two plays to respond. Harper grabbed a 43-yard touchdown pass and escaped Frye at 6:45 in the quarter cutting the score to 17-14.
The Raiders forced Sullivan off the field in four plays and started their next drive from their own 20-yard line. They picked up a first down, but started going backwards after David Ray had a forced fumble that pushed them into a second and 31 from their own 17-yard line.
Sullivan drove to the North County 24 and Kopplemann was intercepted with 11:20 in the fourth quarter. The Raiders failed to do anything with the turnover and the drive ended when Cody Philpot and Ray combined for a sack.
The Eagles had seemingly put the game away with just over two minutes to play in the game. Kopplemann hit Frye for an 11-yard touchdown pass, giving the Eagles a 24-14 lead.
North County responded less than a minute later with another touchdown pass. The Raiders forced Sullivan to give the ball back and they took over from their own five-yard line, but an interception ended the game
