Dear Editor:
I’m grateful we still have the freedom to speak. I know, because I get into trouble for talking, all the time.
In reference to the Sullivan Independent News’ Aug. 12, 2009 issue on the article, “Budget Crunch,” on Page 2A.
Our park workers are local people. I’ve seen how hard they work. They did an outstanding job on the walking path around the lake. Thanks, guys!
They work hard to keep our parks beautiful. Now our city councilmen, to save a few pennies, would give their jobs to an outside source. Does that sound familiar?
The paper also says they are going to cut our patrol officers. Now I can’t say I like everybody that works for the police department, I don’t. (But that’s my problem.)
These officers, when hired, were not told that, if money gets tight, you won’t have a job. No! Most of them have bought homes and are raising their families here.
I would bet that most, if not all, at one time or another, have put their lives on the line for the citizens of Sullivan. This is your “Thanks”!
Councilmen, find somewhere else to cut the money. Let our local people keep their jobs.
A taxpayer and voter,
Geraldine McMahan
