Sullivan High School and the district’s insurance carrier, Missouri United School Insurance Council (MUSIC), have worked together for months since the initial waterline break in the high school gym in an attempt to save the gym floor as well as the money it takes to repair gym floors.
After the waterline broke, several places in the wooden floor buckled. As replacement patches were installed, two core drillings performed by an engineer hired by the school district determined that ground water would not cause further problems.
Because of this determination, the insurance company agreed to install a completely new gymnasium floor. Should ground water become a problem in the future, the insurance company (MUSIC) will not be responsible for replacement of the floor again. The cost to the insurance company to replace the floor was $85,000. The work was completed by Missouri Floor Company of St. Louis.
With the arrival of summer, the gym was closed for use. This allowed the new installation to begin. The most beautiful gym floor that a high school could ever dream of—made of maple—has now been installed and is curing. The school district invites the public to come by to see the floor anytime after Aug. 1.
