At around 4:20 a.m., on Tues., May 19 the Sheriff’s Office received an alarm sounding at Smokes for Less located at the intersection of Hwy 47 and Clear View. When the deputy arrived, he pulled around to the back of the building observing a vehicle driving at him accelerating. The vehicle drove around the deputy going west on Clear View Road. The deputy pursued the suspect vehicle until it crashed near Clear View School and Hwy A. The driver of the vehicle was trapped in the vehicle but was extracted by Union Fire.
He was transported to St. John’s Hospital in Washington where he was examined and released to deputies. The subject stated that he had driven behind the building to go to the bathroom and fled because he was wanted.
Deputies found that the building had been rammed by a vehicle setting off the alarm. The subject was arrested for investigation of tampering and resisting arrest. There was a no bond warrant for his arrest for parole violation. He is a white male, age 43 from St. Louis.
It appears that the vehicle used in the attempted burglary was stolen from the city of Union.
