Zach Mesey pitched a four hit game, but it wasn’t enough as the Sullivan Eagles lost their season opener to the North County Raiders 4-1 on Monday, March 23.

North County plated all four runs in the fifth inning and the Eagles responded with one to end the offense.

“It was a well-pitched game by both pitchers,” said Sullivan head coach Jeff Thornsberry.

A windy day caused the Eagles hard hit balls to die and Sullivan only picked up a pair of hits.

“The wind really killed the hard line drives we hit,” Thornsberry said. “We had the bases loaded in the top of the sixth and Austin Berti was hit by a pitch – that’s how we scored the run.”

Defensively the Eagles played a clean game.

“I was really nervous about our defense,” Thornsberry said, “but, they came through with good defensive plays. It was a real clean high school game for our first time out.

“It was a quick game and we had a lot of opportunities but couldn’t convert.”

The Eagles were slated to host Farmington on Thursday, but the game was cancelled due to the field being too wet.

Thornsberry said that he is trying to get the game rescheduled, but it could possibly be dropped from the schedule altogether.

The Eagles were set to open this week with a trip to Potosi on Monday, followed by a trip to Warrenton on Thursday and playing in the Festus Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
