Ten area residents were among the first to complete the Franklin County Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) classes held Feb. 20-22 at Sullivan Fire House One in downtown Sullivan.
Class instructor, firefighter Jimmy Smythe, stated that the class covered some two and a half days of classes totaling 20 and a half hours.
“This CERT group learned a number of things from disaster preparedness, terrorism preparedness, first aid and fire education,” said Smythe. “I was really pleased with this class and how the program turned out.”
Smythe stated that the team participated in a live scenario tornado disaster class on Sun., Feb. 22, where they put the skills they learned to a test.
“Using the training learned in the classroom and during the hands-on exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhoods, or workplaces, following an emergency or disaster,” said Smythe. “CERT members are also encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their communities.”
Smythe stated that the group will now meet once a month for training and added that additional classes will be held in Franklin County for those interested in becoming a CERT member. Another class is planned in the fall for Sullivan.
Mike Moffitt was elected team leader. Those participating in the event included Dorothy McDonald, Barbara Murray, Cheryl Savage, Penny Murray, Nancy Thorpe Perry, Gene Price, Ed Murray, Mike Savage and Michael Moffitt.
“Anyone interested in becoming a CERT member can contact myself at the firehouse by calling 573-468-6161,” concluded Smythe.
