Mary DeWitt, the former Postmaster of the St. Albans Post Office has pleaded guilty to federal charges of embezzlement of funds from that Post Office, United States Attorney Catherine L. Hanaway announced recently.

According to court documents, from October 2006 until October 2008, as part of her duties DeWitt received cash at the St. Albans Post Office for the sale of postage and services.  From April 2007 to October 2008, DeWitt kept at least $10,000 of money from these sales.  Additionally, between October 2006 and October 2008, DeWitt issued approximately $5000 in U.S. Postal money orders to herself and for her personal bills.

DeWitt, 50, Union, MO, pleaded guilty to two felony counts of misappropriation of postal funds.

She appeared before United States District Judge Carol E. Jackson.

DeWitt now faces a maximum penalty of ten years in prison and/or fines up to $250,000, when she is sentenced on June 23, 2009.

Hanaway commended the work on the case by the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General; and Assistant United States Attorney Carrie Costantin, who is handling the case for the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
