If you have been fortunate, you have had at least one grandparent who has made a positive impact upon your life. Unfortunately, many of our elderly face loneliness and social isolation. If left untreated, these conditions can lead to depression, or even death.
These are issues that can easily be brought under control. It is their hope to launch a program that will do this, and more.
Please allow a moment for an explanation of how the program, “Adopt a Grandparent,” will work. School-aged children will be paired with people who live within nursing homes.
Once a week, for a period of one-to-two hours, the children will visit their “grandparent.” During these visits, the children will read to their “grandparent” (a list of approved books will be provided). Over time, they hope to be able to offer scholarships to children who stay with the program.
They also would like to see parents of involved children (and others within the community) become involved. For example, adults could organize a small group of nursing home residents/children to work on simple craft projects together.
A program such as “Adopt a Grandparent” has potential to make a difference for all in the community. For this to become reality, they are going to need help.
At this time, they are looking for spokespeople— people who are willing to talk to administrators of schools and nursing homes. This is a not-for-profit moment. There is no salary for this position.
